Do you feel like you are only reacting—trying to patch up holes that are opening faster than you can manage? Are you sometimes shocked at yourself?
There is a story about a remote part of Austria where, many years ago, people were dying because their water supply was contaminated. Even health experts were puzzled, since the village got its water supply from a fresh mountain stream that was fed from a spring. An old man had been hired in the past to keep the spring clean. He performed his duties faithfully, but no one ever really checked to see what he was doing. When the town started to cut budgets, the leaders felt that he was not significant and that his job was of not much value. The old man was sent home.
When people started dying, the town discovered the rotting body of a large bird and other toxic debris that had accumulated over the years at the origin of the spring. The insignificant old man suddenly became one of the town’s most important people. Once the debris was removed, the spring flowed pure again.
HOW ABOUT YOU? Is the spring of your heart flowing pure? So quickly the enemy uses disappointments, conflicts, and sinful actions to contaminate your heart. Once contaminated, it affects everything you do. The Bible says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23; NIV).
